The project at task was to up-cycle a piece of furniture. For this project, I bought 4 vintage fiberglass Krueger chairs from Facebook Market. I removed the seats from their respective bases. I made bench bases using Hard Maple wood. The main inspiration was Japanese furniture, and the design allows for modularity, with the option to continue adding more benches.
To start off the research, I created a moodboard consisting of Eames benches that already exist, along with Japanese furniture that demonstrate simple but precise joinery in their wood.
A buck model was created to see if the beam could support the weight of a person and to also visualize estimated dimensions
These are initial sketches showing approximate dimensions for the wooden beams, legs and also the attachment for the chair to the beams. These initial sketches were used to get the idea and overall concept across
After making the buck model, the proof of concept was there and we knew it would be a sturdy bench. I sourced hard maple wood, and from there I figured out all the dimensions of what needed to be cut.
